The Shard, a 95-storey supertall skyscraper is one of the most iconic buildings in London. Our scope of works was to detail the Level 87 balustrade viewing platform balustrade to fit within the exiting primary steelwork.
The balustrade was bolted down to pre-set studs on the floor beams. It had to be strong yet not take away any of the visibility of the spectacular view and so was made up from a solid flat bar frame with a Ø5 mesh welded to the inside.
The handrail was also split and welded to each panel so that each panel with its handrail could be installed at the same time. The loose panels were then bolted to flat bar posts with round spacers between them to prevent the post & panel connections looking too solid.
